Hal and Mal's

If there's a center to the Jackson community, it's probably Hal and Mal's.

One reason I say this, whenever you hear about a party or concert to raise money for some individual or cause, it's usually held at their commerce street restaurant. I've been to a lot of these through the years, and every few weeks you see another one mentioned in the Clarion Ledger.

It's not just music-related or liberal causes either. Next week they're having a benefit for a Clinton Cop whose house burned down. This is just a regular guy in a bad spot and they're pitching in to help out.

Another is longevity. From The Lamar to George Street, to the New Lamar and Hal and Mal's, Malcom and Hal White have been involved in Jackson a long time.

I've had my run-ins with the Brother's White through the years, beginning with a disastrous Zoo Country concert years ago, but you know what? My hat's off to these guys. They're doing what needs to be done. Sometimes it works better than others, but what matters is that somebody is trying, and sometimes trying makes all the difference.
